Bertil Valllien – A True Master
From the very beginning, Bertil Vallien has been, as he himself puts it, both captivated by and struggling with all the fantastic, seductive qualities of glass. He left elegantly cut crystal behind him early on. In his groundbreaking sand castings, he has found his own truth in a rawer, more poetic form of expression. During his visionary journey towards the melting point of glass, he has, in constant dialogue and collaboration with the master craftsmen of the glassworks, invented and refined his own unique artistic expression in glass, far beyond old traditions and techniques.Bertil Vallien's later works show a true master, reflecting where he stands as an artist today. Through his glass art, he explores the unknown and asks eternal questions about the world, humanity, and life.
“Glass has a quality that is unique. No other material can fascinate in the same way, create such optical effects, and evoke reflections on both stability and transience. Even after all these years, it is still just as exciting to open the kiln and see the glowing, dangerous molten glass mass transform into ice and cold.”
